SUMMARY:IBC Focus Group Discussion on Bioeconomy Policy and Bioprospecting Governance
DESCRIPTION:  \nIndonesia is advancing efforts to transform its rich biodiversity into sustainable economic value. On 11 August 2026\, Indonesian Business Council (IBC) convened a back to back events that brought together research institutions\, government\, industry representative\, legal and IP experts\, and civil society organizations to align research progress and strengthen Indonesia’s bioprospecting ecosystem. The event kicked off with an internal coordination meeting with 11 research partners representing 58 of  Indonesia’s researchers under the Bioeconomy Activator Program. Following the coordination meeting\, a wider stakeholders which include representatives from Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs\, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and civil society organizations came together to share experiences and thoughts how to carry out a responsible bioprospecting. \nThe discussion highlighted a critical gap where Indonesia has the biodiversity and knowledge\, but missing the pathways to translate them into intellectual property\, innovation\, and high-value products. As bioprospecting evolves\, protection measures go beyond protecting biological resources but also cover genetic data and traditional knowledge. The discussion emphasized the need for clear legal frameworks\, FPIC\, fair benefit-sharing\, and stronger coordination across stakeholders. Moving forward\, an integrated approach and a dedicated orchestrator will be key to connecting research\, industry\, communities\, and government\, ensuring Indonesia can capture greater value from its biodiversity while supporting innovation\, community welfare\, and conservation.
